Unit 3: The People Could Fly
In this unit, students will explore the life of Frederick Douglass, the escaped slave and noted abolitionist who wrote Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Students will also read a series of informational texts to build background knowledge about slavery, Douglass’ life, and the debate over slavery in the United States before the Civil War. These informational texts will allow students to grasp the context of the Narrative in a more complete way. Finally, students will study poetry. They will learn how to read and analyze a poem, and are introduced to the tools that poets and other writers use to make stories powerful: word choice and figurative language.

Vocabulary"Some know the value of education by having it. I know its value by not having it." “The American people have this to learn: that where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither person nor property is safe.” |
